First Social Media Cleanse

So far, we have shared tips and tricks on tackling those first times. However, what about the other failures that we worry about? What happens if we don’t meet our definition of success?

Today, we would like to speak to a topic that may be seen as controversial, coming from authors who are enrolled in an internet marketing class: the first time taking a social media cleanse.

Something we asked ourselves, is why do millennials rely so heavily on technology?

The first time I went completely without mobile devices and social media, I was forced to. Constraints such as no power outlets or digital service meant that the circumstances I was in dictated my break from technology. And I could not be more grateful.

Taking a social media cleanse, does not have to start by being forced to. We have the option to do so, and maybe choosing to take a break will be a choice that we don’t regret. Now that I am back on campus, I have tried to limit my use of social media - notably, to improve my mental health. Yet, it is so challenging to fully eliminate such powerful tools, both from a personal and professional lens.

Our team has come up with a few helpful tips on how to resist the temptations. You can try to:

- Turn off unnecessary notifications and sound notifications

- Set limits of screen time

- Disconnect media outlets from productivity tools

- Put your phone away when studying (you can even give it to a friend to hold - this is something I've done and trust me, it helps so much!)

In order to promote this shift of less social media consumption, we challenge you to do one of the following, and let us know what happens!

- Go to dinner without your phone

- Take handwritten notes in class instead of being on laptop

- Track your response time

- Delete unused apps

We recognize that this may not be feasible for everyone and that the nature of certain marketing courses or clubs require us to leverage our personal social media networks to convey messages and build brand awareness. However, with that being said, it is worth a shot - and I think you’d be pleasantly surprised at what you get out of this challenge.
